HAY GUYS. So, guess who’s a Gator.
EUGENE SLEDGE IS A GATOR.
Yep, apparently he got his PhD at UF. Excuse me while I go run around the Biology Department for no good reason next time I take a midday break. 8DOh man I don’t even know where the Bio Dept. is. D:
Anyway. I am back in Florida now, and updating (kind of) since I have been accused (somewhat correctly) of making a number of empty promises regarding Livejournal updates. Of course, I am covered in cats right now (well, two), so I won’t exactly be delivering on any of these promises as they all involve pictures which are on my phone which is currently very far away on the other side of the room. I can’t even show you a picture of them, because said picture is on the aforementioned phone. But I now have a four month-old kitten named Mushu, and a five year-old cat named Hey Baby (who will be renamed as soon as I can think of somethingthat’s not Leckie).
I got to hang out with Stacie on Thursday night when I got in, and we had delicious PF Chang’s and went to the bookstore where I proved that I am weak against books and got China Marine (but God, Sledge, you’re bleeding me dry, I don’t think I’ve ever paid that much for a paperback and it’s not like you’re even getting any of the profit ;_;).
Des Moines was… Iowa-riffic. After a nice 5.5-hour drive through mostly cornfields on Friday, we checked into the hotel and went down to the lobby for their free cocktail (and, thankfully, Diet Coke) hour before we (sans Jennie) went to see Jersey Boys, which was... well, it was like a concert with some vague attempt at a glossed-over story, but as long as the music is what you care about, you’re all good. I did spend maybe the first 5-10 minutes wondering if I’d just missed something and I was supposed to know what was going on already, but the story (such as it was) slowed down to a followable pace shortly after that. But the music was good, and the effects were great – as in, they used giant flatscreens for some awesome effects, as well as lights and what must have been some nifty motorized platforms. And the guy who played… guh, Bob Gaudio looked suspiciously like Leckie from very far away and with crappy vision like mine, so let’s just say that made it all the more enjoyable for the likes of someone such as myself. ;D
And of course now all the music is still stuck in my head. Whee.
We had a late dinner at a generic brewery restaurant, which was really pretty good, and then it was back to the hotel for collapsing and getting up stupidly early to head over to the country club to set up for Katie’s bridal shower. That went okay – she liked our presents, which was good! – and then we went to go pick up her dress for tailoring, also checking out veils and I seriously can’t believe they can sell a piece of tulle for seven hundred dollars when I could make it for FIVE. Seriously. I’m in the wrong business, guys. There was dinner at Katie’s house, and she opened birthday presents, and then on Sunday we headed home and I got to hang out with Jen for a bit, which was fun~ :D
And then Monday I flew back with the cats. Getting through airport security with them was just fine, really – Mom got a gate pass and we found a couple of lanes way off to the side with no one in them, and both cats were amazingly good about being tugged out of the carrier and carried through the metal detector. And of course everyone wanted to see them, but eventually we got them secured back in the carrier with no problems and had a delicious lunch of Chicago-style hot dogs before I went off to the gate. The flight was fine, a little turbulence but not too bad, and then I passed out early Monday night (like, midnight D:) and spent Tuesday getting them acclimated to the apartment, buying groceries, and going out to see Despicable Me (awesome!) in the evening.
Which brings us finally to today, during which I had to do the second of two Starlab presentations, after which (undergrad) Amanda and I walked it back to the Astronomy Department in the not-so-pouring rain and got coffee afterwards to make everything better. Also, it appears that Trip really is dying-almost-dead, so the IT guys ordered me a new hard drive and are attempting to save my data. For all that I really need about a million more weeks between now and mid-August, I think I’m glad July is almost over. >>
And I went running in the (drizzling) rain and ate a late dinner and now I am very tired. I think I may just attempt to dislodge the cats and go read my book and pass out early – maybe it’ll be good for me? I did actually wake up this morning only slightly later than I’d planned, so it’s my hope that I can push that back to when I actually plan and things will be awesome. :D;
Also, Scott brought me a stuffed Ewok back from Boston. Just to make me cringe. XD Best officemate ever. No, really. Now if only I could find him that Jurassic Park hat...
Okay. PICTURES NEXT TIME. I promise. For real?
